The metropolis received torrential rains the entire day yesterday and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy showers today as well.

After heavy rain battered the city, people on roads were forced to walk in waist-high water, abandoning cars to walk.

"I was stranded in Dadar, waited for three hours and then went back to office, spent the night, worked in the day and returned home", said Shaibal Gupta, a space seller, who stays in Vasai.

Mumbai: The suburban train services on the western railway line in Mumbai have resumed after incessant downpour threw life out of gear in the city.

At least five persons were killed in different rain-related incidents during Tuesday's deluge when Mumbai was virtually paralyzed while the political parties kept blaming each other for the mess and leaving no opportunity to take the credit for relief work. "My son also could not get home because of the heavy flooding", said bank worker Vijaya Das.

Mumbai struggles to cope with monsoon rains every year, prompting critics to accuse the government of poor planning.

Floods have killed more than 1,000 people in India, Nepal and Bangladesh in recent weeks and affected close to 40 million across northern India, southern Nepal and northern Bangladesh.

Catastrophic flooding in 2005 killed more than 500 people in Mumbai, and majority had been living in shantytown slums.
