Rather than just overhauling its popular plug-in electric city vehicle for the next model year, in Frankfurt, BMW will be unveiling a thoroughly updated i3 but will also be taking the wraps off a new variant, the performance-focused i3S.

While the regular i3 continues to produce 168bhp from its electric powertrain, the new i3s model offers 181bhp. To sharpen up the driving experience, BMW has re-tuned the springs and dampers, increased the tracks by 20mm and include a new Sports mode on the driver control interface. A sport mode has also been included, which improves throttle response and tightens the steering to "further accentuate the car's sporting edge". The front and rear bumpers are chunkier, there are splashes of black everywhere and the S versions can be had with larger diameter and wider 20-inch alloy wheels.

Other features available for the 2018 BMW i3 include: Actice Cruise Control, Active Driving Assistant, Advanced Real Time Traffic Information, Park Distance Control, Front Collision Warning and Pedestrian Protection as such. The current BMW i3 starts at $42,400 with a short-range 60 Ah battery, $44,450 with the 94 Ah pack, and $48,300 for the 94 Ah battery with range-extender engine. It adds a small petrol engine between the rear wheels that acts as a generator for the batteries, helping to alleviate much of the range anxiety that burdens some electric auto owners.

BMW has given a cosmetic makeover to its i3 electric hatchback for the 2018 model year. BMW has coated the car's A-pillars and roofline in a glossy black finish, borrowing the scheme from other accents on the i3. A new chrome trim strip runs across the back and there are two new exterior colors: Melbourne Red metallic and Imperial Blue metallic.

Buyers can choose from four interior trim options, dubbed Altelier, Loft, Lodge and Suite, which changes the material used for the seats.

Inside, BMW's latest 10.25-inch tile-based iDrive infotainment touchscreen features, as does a new array of digital connected services and standard Apple CarPlay.

Since there's been no change to the battery, the range likely matches the 2017 model's EPA-rated 114 miles. The REx is evailable from £37,220, or £32,475 after grant. Adding the Range Extender package to the i3s pushes its price up to £40,125, or £35,625 once the plug-in grant is taken into account.

Going by the trend BMW has been following for a long time now, the automobile brand will make these reveals so as to keep the public interested in their cars while some exclusive and interesting announcements will be reserved for the Frankfurt show. Order books are open imminently.
