Boris Johnson slammed by United Kingdom statistics chief for repeating debunked Brexit claim

May is set to update her Brexit strategy next Friday in a speech in Florence, Italy, days after Hammond recommended a "status quo" transition.

Then the first counter attack: a spokesman for Mr Johnson claimed that Sir David was actually complaining about the headlines provoked by the foreign secretary's article. "It is a clear misuse of official statistics".

What we've got is Theresa May managing that process - and I'm going to make sure, as far as I'm concerned and the rest of the Cabinet is concerned, we help her do that.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd accused her cabinet colleague of being a Brexit "back-seat driver", telling the BBC that while it was fine for Mr Johnson to show his enthusiasm for Brexit, he should remember he was not "driving the car".

His letter continued: "It also assumes that payments now made to the United Kingdom by the European Union, including for example for the support of agriculture and scientific research, will not be paid by the United Kingdom government when we leave".

"This confuses gross and net contributions".

The £350 million claim was bitterly disputed by the Remain campaign before the referendum, and comprehensively debunked.

"I am here to tell you that this country will succeed in our new national enterprise, and will succeed mightily".

As part of a new treaty, Britain wants the creation of mechanisms to maintain current operational capabilities between the United Kingdom and the EU.

In theory the figure is what the United Kingdom contributes to the European Union budget, but does not account for the annual rebate the United Kingdom receives, or any European Union funds spent in Britain.

"Both the United Kingdom and the EU would benefit from ensuring that no operational gaps are created" by Brexit, the statement from the Department for Exiting the European Union in London said.

The Labour MP Chuka Umunna, a leading supporter of Open Britain, said: "Yet again Boris's outright lying has been exposed by Britain's statistics watchdog".

With May due to set out her vision for Brexit in a speech in the Italian city of Florence on September 22, Johnson published a 4,300-word newspaper article on September 16 that roamed well beyond his ministerial brief and, in some cases, went beyond the approach set out by the government.

Later, after the motives and timing of his intervention were criticised, Mr Johnson insisted in a tweet linked to his article that he was "looking forward to PM's Florence speech". The Brexit secretary, David Davis, has also been clear that he never campaigned on that point.

"What we've got is Theresea May managing that process, she's driving the auto to continue the allegory, and I'm going to make sure as far as I'm concerned and the rest of the cabinet is concerned we help her do that".
