Bright Light Seen in Iran Was Russian Missile: Commander

  • The new Iranian long range missile Khoramshahr is displayed during the annual military parade marking the anniversary of the outbreak of its devastating 1980-1988 war with Saddam Hussein's Iraq on September 22,2017 in Tehran

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Twitter the missile test illustrates the weakness of the Iran nuclear deal reached by his predecessor Barack Obama.

Citing US officials, Fox reported that the missile that was supposedly launched has a range of 2,500 kilometers, putting Israel within striking distance. Israel's Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman called the missile test "a provocation to the United States and its allies, including Israel", as well as "further proof of Iran's ambition to become a global power that threatens not only the Middle East, but all the countries of the free world". That same day, video of the test firing of a Khoramshahr aired on Iranian state TV.

However, Iran never confirmed that the January test was the Khoramshahr missile.

Reports quickly surfaced that US radar and intelligence sensors did not detect a launch in the first place. Following Iran's announcement of the missile test, Trump on Saturday tweeted disparagingly of the deal. "They are also working with North Korea".

Reports of the launch came on the heels of widespread condemnation of Iran's ballistic missile program during the United Nations General Assembly and was widely interpreted as an act of defiance by Tehran. "Not much of an agreement we have!"

The nuclear agreement is created to prevent Iran from building a nuclear bomb but does not prohibit it from developing missiles.

"Iran tests missile despite Trump pressure", the BBC reported, for example, adding analysis that Trump's rhetoric against Iran and North Korea had pushed ostensibly moderate Iranian President Hassan Rouhani "into a corner with the hardliners" and prodded him to authorize the claimed missile test. "All three officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss an intelligence issue", the AP reports.

Trump has suggested he might seek to renegotiate the nuclear deal or abandon it.

A detailed report earlier this year by the US-Korea Institute at John Hopkins University in the United States found: "The available evidence can not verify speculation that the Iranian missile is similar to North Korea's Musudan".

Trump has until October 15 to notify Congress on whether Iran remains has complied with the 2015 multilateral deal. He stressed that his concern is about Iran's behavior in other areas, such as its development of ballistic missiles and its support for extremist groups.
