The Lions' $1.7 billion value is a 3-percent increase over the year before.

On average, an National Football League franchise is worth $2.52 billion, an increase of 8 percent since 2016.

The Dallas Cowboys captured the top spot for the 11th straight year, with a value of $4.8 billion, up 14%, according to Forbes.

2013: $840 million (31st of 32 teams).

The average franchise received an eight percent bump in value this year. Washington's $3.1 billion value was fourth-highest (with $482 million in revenue), while the 49ers rounded out the top-five at $3.05 billion (with $458 million in revenue). The team recently wrapped up a $47 million round of renovations at Bank of America Stadium, which was part of a five-year, $87.5 million public-private financing agreement with the City of Charlotte.

It is the first time the Jaguars franchise has been valued at more than $2 billion. Although the Los Angeles Rams got a huge boost when they moved to L.A. in 2016 - they jumped from the 28th most valuable team to the sixth most valuable - the Chargers only saw a slight increase.

The Giants returned to the No. 3 spot with a $3.3 billion value (up 9 percent from previous year with $477 million in revenue).

Globally, according to Forbes' rankings of July, the Cowboys are followed by baseball's New York Yankees at US$3.7 billion, a figure the Patriots have now tied.
