Jutanugarn, who was the LPGA Tour rookie of the year in 2013, has really come of age in 2017 with eight top tens and of she was to go on and win tomorrow then she will have well and truly emerged from the shadow of her brilliant sister.

She won her first major title at the 2009 McDonald's LPGA Championship.

The Swede saw off America's Brittany Altomare at the first extra hole after the pair shot final rounds of 66 to finish on nine-under par for 54 holes - heavy rain on day one saw the event at the Evian Resort Golf Club reduced to a three-round tournament.

Overnight leader Moriya Jutanugarn of Thailand had a hard day and missed her spot in the final playoff when she bogeyed on the last hole to end up tied for third with past champion Lydia Ko of New Zealand and Australian Katherine Kirk.

A birdie at 14 immediately offset her prior bogey, before Ko suddenly reversed her previous par five performance.

In 40km/h winds and rain that caused puddles within 15 minutes of the heavens opening, Nordqvist won her second career major with a scrambled bogey as the long par-four 18 effectively became a par five.

Indian golfer Aditi Ashok carded a disappointing six-over 77 to crash out of the weather-hit Evian Championships, the fifth and final Major for women.

A nine-time victor on the LPGA tour, the Japanese star never claimed a major title.

It capped a bittersweet tournament for the former world No.1, who has endured a testing year but played with aplomb at a tournament she won two years ago.

The 30-year-old has been battling glandular fever in recent months but said she had been inspired by her grandfather's advice to "never give up" when times are tough.

Inevitably a question about the comparisons between her and Ariya came up during her post round press conference.

With the win, Nordqvist, of Sweden, will take home $547,500.

Earlier, Melbourne's So Oh recorded her second-best major championship finish with a closing 72 enough for her to finish T14 at two under.

"I just felt like I wanted to go out there today and focus on what I could do", Nordqvist said, LPGA.com reported.

Despite the ending, Ko's performance makes it two consecutive strong weeks, following her second place in Indianapolis the week prior.

"I chipped in for birdie at the first hole, so that was a good start", she said.

Jutanugarn's first-round 65 put the young Thai player in prime position to claim her first LPGA title.

The 23-year-old added: "It was good for me playing in the last group in a major at Kingsbarns".
