Fistfights, chair-throwing erupt in Uganda's Parliament during President's age-limit debate

  • Lawmakers get into a fistfight in Uganda parliament

On Tuesday however, Uganda took it to the next level when their MPs got involved in an all-out brawl over attempts to attend their president's long hold on power.

His proposal to raise the presidential age limit above the age of 75 has faced major opposition from activists, the opposition, religious leaders and even some members of Museveni's governing party in Parliament yesterday.

Many of those opposed to removing the age limit wore red hats or headbands, a symbol of resistance to the constitutional amendment.

The evictions came after the parliamentary speaker, a member of the ruling party, accused some lawmakers of obstructing proceedings in a riotous session Tuesday during which legislators brawled over efforts to introduce legislation to remove the presidential age limit of 75 from Uganda's constitution.

Despite the disruption, the bill was passed after the leader of the parliamentary opposition, Winnie Kiiza of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), led a walk-out.

The debate was postponed last week amid heavy police deployment to parliament.

Removing the presidential age barrier in the country, which now stands at 75, would allow for 73-year-old Museveni to remain in power beyond 2021 when the country's next elections are scheduled.

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has banned live broadcasts of events it says incite violence, are discriminatory, stir up hatred and promote a culture of violence.

Police have violently broken up street demonstrations protesting the effort to amend the constitution.

Museveni, who has been at the helm of the country since 1986 and is credited with restoring peace and stability to the African nation, won re-election past year in a poll marred by allegations of vote fraud and intimidation by security forces. He has been in power for more than three decades.

Protests by students and opposition activists and supporters in Kampala against the amendment, sometimes broadcast live, have been put down with tear gas and arrests of scores of people.
