Iran Nuclear Deal Critics Push Plan for 'Global Economic Embargo'

The group said it was "concerned by statements from the Trump administration that it may be seeking to create a false pretext for accusing Iran of noncooperation or noncompliance with the agreement in order to trigger the reimposition of nuclear-related sanctions against Iran".

The sanctions include two Iran-based networks that are responsible for cyberattacks against US financial systems.

"More than 80 nuclear-nonproliferation experts signed a letter to the Trump administration Wednesday, urging him to stay in the Iran agreement, which they called "effective and verifiable" and an "important success", the full implementation of which is critical to worldwide peace and security". Another prominent neoconservative and opponent of the Iran deal, former United Nations ambassador John Bolton, opted to publish his own policy memo last month after acknowledging that he no longer had access to the Oval Office.

Shortly before the JCPOA was finalized, President Obama in April 2015 said Iran had "agreed to the most robust and intrusive inspections and transparency regime ever negotiated for any nuclear program in history".

"This is precisely a scenario that the hardliners in Iran might love", he said, "that is using the fact that the out of step with the rest of the worldwide community to drive a wedge between us and Europe, between us and the Chinese and the Russians on this issue".

Only under those circumstances could the US get countries such as China and Russian Federation to abide by them.

Iran's vice president and head of its nuclear agency, Ali Akbar Salehi, told the German daily Der Spiegel last week that if Trump walks away from the deal, his country will uphold it with the other P5+1 countries.

This would allow the U.S. to impose further sanctions against the Regime, would show that the U.S. was prepared to get tough on Iran, and could bring Iran back to the negotiating table as they would not survive without the sanctions relief guaranteed under the nuclear deal. There have been reports that there's a debate going on within the Trump administration regarding whether to decertify.

In a Wednesday statement organized by the Arms Control Association, a Washington-based disarmament advocacy group, experts in nuclear nonproliferation diplomacy from around the world hailed the deal as a "net plus for worldwide nuclear nonproliferation efforts", The New York Times reported.

A European official, who asked not to be identified because the talks are private, described a visit by Americans as part of a listening tour on Iran policy and stressed there was no agreement. Under something called the Additional Protocol, which Iran accepted as part of the JCPOA, inspectors can request access to undeclared sites, including military sites.

What Amano did not say, however, is whether military sites are now being inspected - something critics of the deal might seize upon.

Abandoning the deal, these experts warn, "would decrease the time it would take for Iran to obtain enough nuclear material for a warhead" and "increase the likelihood of wider conflict in the Middle East and could trigger a destabilizing nuclear competition in region".

Nauert did not specify which sanctions the administration had waived. "But I think the question becomes, even if that's their near-term strategy, whether it is politically sustainable over the long-term?" "Establishing a credible threat of a total USA financial embargo in-waiting would enhance US diplomatic leverage to curb Iranian illicit behavior and allow for a period of further evaluation at the end of the next 90-day period". That would very likely shift the focus to Tehran - and to Congress, which could move to impose new sanctions on Iran.
