Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is reportedly doing his best to slow down Roger Goodell's latest contract negotiations, adding another awkward twist in the saga involving the Dallas Cowboys, Ezekiel Elliott and the NFL.

Schefter and Mortensen reported that Jones has "impeded" progress on an extension, with one source saying that the deal would be done if not for Jones.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is trying to impede the progress of National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell receiving a contract extension, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen.

A source told Schefter that "if it weren't for Jerry's involvement, Goodell's extension by now could be done".

Goodell's extension was supposed to finalize last month. Sep.

Goodell's current contract ends in 2019. "There are people who are still pushing for that deal, but right now there's some opposition as well".

Jones will be on a conference call this week with the compensation committee to discuss Goodell's salary. That enraged Elliott, the Cowboys and the NFLPA and is the crux of their appeal of the suspension in the court system.

The compensation committee includes six owners - Robert Kraft (Patriots), Arthur Blank (Falcons), Clark Hunt (Chiefs), John Mara (Giants), Bob McNair (Texans) and Art Rooney II (Steelers).

The increasingly edgy relationship between Jones and Goodell has sharpened to the point where Goodell's long-term future as NFL commissioner could come under fire, according to league sources.

The next step for Goodell's contract talk comes Wednesday, when the committee has a conference call that's meant to wrap up a specific term proposal for Goodell.

Goodell, 58, has been the top executive in the nation's most popular sport since September 1, 2006, when he succeeded Paul Tagliabue.
