  • Twitter increases the character limit of tweets for some users

That's it. Tweet Embed: Speaking as one of the small group of people who've been selected to test the 280 character limit, please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please change it back you terrible people.

A communication in January past year revealed that Twitter was performing some internal tests for lengthy tweets and considering texts as long as 10,000 characters to boost its client base.

Twitter says that 9 percent of tweets in English are exactly 140 characters; in Japanese, only 0.4 percent of tweets hit the limit.

In its most recent quarter, Twitter reported its base of monthly active users was unchanged at 328 million compared to the first three months of the year. Last year, Twitter extended the character limit in a way by letting users post images and GIFs without these adding to the character count in their tweets. While sarcastic puns and witty tweets swarmed the site, a lot of hilarious "desi" memes stood out! Twitter's bold move comes at the back of a consistently low user growth rate and widening losses. "Today we had everyone in the company join an @TwitterSafety all hands". What matters most is that this works for our community - we will be collecting data and gathering feedback along the way. User growth was flat in Q2 2017, making it especially important for Twitter to increase time spent among the users it now has. This can detract from Twitter's core identity as a venue for succinct posts. "What matters now is we clearly show why this change is important, and prove to you all it's better.Give us some time to learn and confirm (or challenge!) our ideas", he tweeted. But it's always going to be a niche platform: It delivers information overload, which is only enjoyable for some of us.

When are longer tweets rolling out?

Daisuke Furuta, the editor of BuzzFeed Japan, has comforting words for tweeters nervous about a bloviated future. "Also, in all markets, when people don't have to cram their thoughts into 140 characters and actually have some to spare, we see more people tweeting - which is awesome!"

The more tweets change, the more tweets stay the same.

Have you tried some of these methods to enable Twitter's 280 characters limit?
