Of these, almost 357,000 - a third of Myanmar's total Rohingya population - have left since October when the latest upsurge in violence began.

Thousands of displaced people in Rakhine have been stranded or left without food for weeks.

Humanitarian agencies are seeking $77 million to assist the massive influx of people who have fled to the country from Myanmar and struggled to find space at existing camps and settlements and lack access to basic services at new settlements.

The U.N. rights chief said he was appalled that Myanmar has reportedly started laying mines on its border with Bangladesh, and that refugees are only allowed to come back home if they provide proof of their nationality, even though most Rohingya are stateless.

During the meeting, the Bangladesh High Commissioner also spoke about the need for the worldwide community to intervene and put pressure on Myanmar to address the exodus, sources said.

Azril said the Bangladesh government had, on Sept 8, taken a diplomatic initiative by proposing to Myanmar to create a "safe zone" inside its Rakhine state under the surveillance of the United Nations (UN).

The mines seriously maimed three people, including two children, Amnesty said, and one man was killed within the past week. "International organizations and we, as Muslim countries in particular, should fight together by using every means available to stop that cruelty", he said.

"We have to take care of everybody who is living in our country, whether or not they are our citizens, because it is our duty", Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi told reporters Thursday.

Witnesses in Myanmar's Rakhine state say entire villages have been burned to the ground since Rohingya militants launched a series of coordinated attacks on August 25, prompting a military-led crackdown.

"Thousands of Rohingya Muslims are coming to Bangladesh daily".

"Even prior to the most recent influx, many Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh lived in unsafe, overcrowded and unhygienic conditions, with little protection from the elements", the United Nations spokesman said. "They want shelter, they want a safe place", said Misada Saif, a Red Cross official in Bangladesh.
