The US Forces Korea will reportedly position the launchers at a new base in Seongju, some 300 kilometres south of Seoul, on Thursday.

The United States and South Korea are moving forward with plans to install four more Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) rocket launchers at a US base in Seongju, in spite of widespread opposition and protests from local residents and activists.

THAAD is created to intercept ballistic missiles.

Now, the missile defense system reliably closes the sky above South Korea. Japan on the other hand has supported the plans, saying it will contribute to peace and stability.

President Donald Trump has spoken with South Korean President Moon Jae-in Monday for the first time since North Korea's recent nuclear test.

The ministry noted that six launchers will give the US a full THAAD battery, meaning it will have a much better chance of detecting and shooting down missiles from the North.

China has once again urged the USA and South Korea to halt the deployment of a high-tech missile defense system in South Korea.

Moon has rapidly changed his tune since Sunday, however, following North Korea's latest nuclear test.

Two truck-mounted launchers and a powerful X-band radar are now in operation at the base.

The 29-nation US -led alliance expressed full solidarity with Japan and South Korea, North Korea's neighbors.

Trump is to speak Wednesday with China's president.

The U.S. keeps threatening to use military options.

China and Russian Federation have strenuously opposed the THAAD deployment, viewing it as aimed at bolstering Washington's military presence in the region and undermining their security interests. He said it "offers a genuine way to defuse the tensions and a step-by-step settlement".

The US is also expected to present a North Korean sanctions resolution at the United Nations, and is aiming for a vote to take place next week, AFP reported on Monday.
