According to reports from national media, Ministers Radha Mohan Singh, Giriraj Singh and Sanjeev Balyan too resigned and more resignations are expected to come in.

A union cabinet reshuffle appeared imminent with skill development minister Rajiv Pratap Rudy resigning on Thursday night amid speculation that some more ministers may quit ahead of the exercise expected before Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves for China on Sunday.

Rudy and Bharati are likely to be given organisational roles in the party, ahead of the 2019 general poll, BJP sources said.

Before nine new ministers took their oath today, they were told by Prime Minister Narendra Modi that they "have been chosen with great consideration, so now please perform".

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu had offered to resign owning moral responsibility for the recent train accidents, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi has put it on hold. While there was no official word about their meeting, it was believed in the party circles that the Cabinet reshuffle and political re-assignment of Union Ministers were discussed.

Sources said that it is only after after this development that these leaders have offered to resign from their posts. Water resources minister Uma Bharti has also reportedly offered to quit on health grounds.

Finance and corporate affairs minister Arun Jaitley was given the additional charge of defence, while Smriti Irani got the additional portfolio of information and broadcasting. Karnataka will go for assembly polls next year.
