And this year the incredibly brilliant and extremely deserving Sampha took home the prize for "Process".

British-Sierra Leonean soul signer, Sampha is the victor of the 2017 Mercury Prize.

Fellow British-Sierra Leonean, Idris Elba, was there to present him with the award.

Sheeran was, however, the only shortlisted artist not performing during the ceremony, which was held on Thursday night at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith.

The singer-songwriter was pitted against artists like Kate Tempest, Stormzy and Dinosaur Jr, as well as previous winners The xx and alt-J.

The judging panel of 12 included Jamie Cullum and Mumford & Son's Marcus Mumford.

"I'd like to dedicate this award to my parents", South Londoner Sampha said during his acceptance speech.

Stormzy appeared dressed in black standing at a table of others dressed in black with balaclavas to recreate the cover of his hit album during his rendition of First Things First and Blinded By Your Grace. Ed Sheeran's hit album ÷ (Divide) was on the shortlist for the honour, as was alt-j's Relaxer, Blossoms by Blossoms, Kate Tempest's Let Them Eat Chaos, and Gang Signs & Prayer by rapper Stormzy.

The 2016 Mercury Prize went to grime hip-hop artist Skepta, for his album "Konnichiwa" in recognition of a resurgent homegrown genre. The Mercury Prize started out strong with Primal Scream's Screamadelica winning in 1992 and Suede's self-titled debut winning in 1993.
