  • Springfield-Hampden County District Attorney Anthony Gulluni announced the charges

"Over all these years they never gave up on Lisa and that is what we're focused on, it's always been about justice for Lisa", she said.

Police gathered evidence from the crime scene at the time of the murder but they were unable to officially identify a suspect until now, reports said.

An arrest has been made in the decades-old murder of a teacher's aid from Agawam. Her throat had been cut and she had multiple stab wounds.

Officials announced a match Monday from DNA testing after arresting Schara Saturday on charges of murder, aggravated rape, and kidnapping. Schara was a patient at the hospital, according to the newspaper.

Ziegert was working alone at the Brittany Card and Gift Shop in Agawam on the night of April 15, 1992, when someone apparently kidnapped her, according to Globe archives.

Upon arriving in the morning the clerk found the store open, the lights on, and the victim's vehicle parked where it was the night before. Her body was found four days later on Easter Sunday in woods about four miles from where she was abducted, the news organization reported.

The DNA sample had been run against databases in the past, and investigators made a decision to take another look at prior persons of interest who did not appear in existing DNA databases.

The victim's mother Dee Ziegert said'We are so grateful for the hard work and determination and faith that all of these investigators had over all these years

The next day, a person close to Schara contacted police with information about handwritten documents in which he admitted raping and killing Ziegert, Gulluni said.

Police made headway in the case after distributing a computer-generated picture a year ago, using DNA found at the scene to estimate what a possible suspect would look like, reports said.

Last year, a single source male DNA profile was developed by investigators from evidence taken from Ziegert's body.

Schara was located in CT the next day after a suicide attempt, and arrested when his DNA was found to be a match.

"We'll do anything, and sit through anything to have this happen, and to face this person and to say, 'We got you, '" Diane Ziegert said.

Schara was arrested at a medical facility in Connecticut and is in the custody of the Connecticut State Police, the district attorney said.
