Scientists Discovered Black Hole: 100000 Times More Massive Than the Sun

  • Midsized black hole may be hiding out in the Milky Way

Researchers say they will continue to study the intermediate-mass black hole candidate in the hope of confirming its existence.

Yet, the Intermediate Mass Black Holes (IMBHs) have been considered as a missing link in the cosmic objects' evolution and science behind the formation of the supermassive black holes. But for some perspective, they're at least 10-15,000 light years away from Earth, so we haven't got to worry about too much just yet.

Professor Tomoharu Oka and colleagues used computer simulations to show the high velocity motion, or kinematics, of the gas could only be explained by an intermediate black hole concealed in its midst.

Black holes are the stuff of dreams for science fiction writers everywhere and a source of fascination for scientists and ordinary people alike. Then they added Monday's find to the list of about 60 other known black hole "candidates". "We have already detected several candidates for stray black holes".

They also found the emission from this cloud closely resembles a scaled-down version of the Milky Way's quiescent supermassive black hole.

But such black holes had not previously been reliably detected and their existence has been fiercely debated among the astronomical community.

A black hole is a region of space that has such an extremely powerful gravitational field that it absorbs all the light that passes near it and reflects none.

Finding an IMBH would open up a new avenue of research in understanding supermassive black holes-black holes that can be billions of times the mass of the sun that sit at the center of most massive galaxies, including the Milky Way. "It's the most promising evidence so far" for an intermediate mass black hole, says astronomer Kevin Schawinski of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, who was not involved in the study. IMBHs are a newer theory; and while many have been proposed, none have been accepted yet.

Scientists believe they have discovered a huge black hole near the center of the Milky Way hiding within a massive cloud of molecular gas. The properties exhibited by the molecular cloud are being associated to gravitational kicks that are caused by invisible compact objects that usually weigh about 105, 000 solar masses. The detection of a potential black hole weighing as much as 100,000 suns is precisely the middle step in the process that astronomers have sought. IMHBs have never been officially identified, though. That growth should happen in part by mergers with other black holes and in part by accretion of material from the part of the galaxy that surrounds the black hole.

'This would make a considerable contribution to the progress of modern physics'.
