Southgate: Kane compares himself to Ronaldo and Messi

  • Bournemouth were mugged in the last seconds of their Premier League game against Manchester City ending up with nothing after a terrific show of determination

Marcus Rashford turned from zero to hero for England as he recovered from an early mistake to score and assist as the Three Lions beat Slovakia 2-1 to move a step closer to qualifying for the World Cup.

Phil Neville has hailed Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson for the role he played in England's 2-1 win over Slovakia on Monday night.

Marcus Rashford and Eric Dier scored for England in a match which all but assured the Three Lions a place in the 2018 World Cup finals in Russian Federation.

"I'm pleased we controlled the game in the second half".

England didn't really pressure Slovakia, but they did find the equalizer on a set piece, with Rashford's low corner going straight to the right boot of Eric Dier, who found the top corner with a really good finish to equalize.

With just under 15 minutes remaining in the match and with England 2-1 up, Dele Alli was clearly seen on camera flipping his middle finger.

"It was a lot of fun to play here in Stuttgart, the mood was great", said coach Joachim Loew.

This group of players, however, still have it all to prove at major tournaments given many of them were involved in England's miserable showing at Euro 2016.

Gareth Southgate started with Eric Dier back in central midfield and Marcus Rashford out wide. "At times he has to do better but his work on the ball, the maturity of his performance and his ability to go past people was devastating to the opposition and lifted the whole crowd". "It's very hard to break down such a well-organised defence but they scored the goals, they won 4-0 and that win away is great".

With two games remaining of the European qualifying campaign for next year's Russian Federation tournament, England are now five points clear of the second-placed Slovaks in Group F. Southgate said, referring to Fabio Capello, "I missed a lot of games, I remember when I saw him in front of Spain under Capello, it was a long time for his first worldwide match".

Southgate's men now boast a five-point cushion over second-place Slovakia after a comeback win that stirred most of the 67,823 in attendance, just days after an underwhelming display led some travelling fans to turn on their team in Malta. I thought England scored the equaliser with their worst player and the victor with their best player. "I think they've got a very good manager who is willing to try new things".

Such praise is unlikely to get to the Manchester United centre-back's head, though, and nor is the supporter angst displayed in Malta.

"It's been a big week for them", said Southgate. Kane wriggled his way past two defenders in the box and drove the ball across goal only for the keeper to parry it to Alli, but the youngster could only watch as it bounced off him and out of play.
