Stam encourages Eagles to show patience for De Boer

  • Burnley FC news Nick Pope eager for more action after impressive Premier League debut

During the worldwide break, chairman Steve Parish admitted the start to the new campaign had "not been great", adding "it's a results-based business, so if you don't get wins".

"There were like four or five 100 per cent chances".

Palace have typically gone for managers who are known for a no frills, defensive, long-ball style of play that can hit teams on the break if need be and that is the kind of players that they have at their disposal. Overseeing three defeats from three games, De Boer's possession based philosophy has come under fire from critics and fans alike. The likes of Andros Townsend, Christian Benteke and Jason Schlupp have fantastic physical profiles, however, certainly lack the technique and composure to play under De Boer's system.

De Boer is an odds-on favourite with some British bookmakers to become the first Premier League manager to leave his post, and reportedly held talks with chairman Steve Parish on Monday.

So, for the trip to Burnley, De Boer abandoned his three-at-the-back philosophy in favour of a 4-3-3 set-up more familiar to his Palace players.

"I've been watching him since he was first at West Brom", Dyche said.

"I had a good feeling we would score, I had confidence, but we didn't start with that confidence".

"But if you look all over at how we showed spirit, I think we were quite dynamic".

That was the last effort from the hosts as they battened down the hatches and scrapped to hang on to the three points, which they managed to do thanks to Pope's excellent save from Benteke and Dann's terrible miss.

Chris Wood scored for Burnley to condem Crystal Palace to a fourth staright defeat in as many games.

"I think I am capable of scoring most (kinds of goals)".

"I think there was only one team deserving to win, which was us".

Crystal Palace must be patient with Frank de Boer, according to fellow Dutchman and Reading boss Jaap Stam.

The New Zealander's late equaliser against Tottenham, coupled with the unavailability of the injured Jeff Hendrick, persuaded the manager, Sean Dyche, to promote him to the starting 11. But De Boer can't shoulder all the blame for that statistic.

Wood said: "I've got ambitions and I'd like to prove a lot of people wrong - people will always say things, but it's for me to go out and do my best for the club. It's hard enough to take over as a new manager anyway, then you add that in and it's difficult", he said. "I want players that recognise what they have to do in certain situations", he says.
