  • Taco Bell plans to open 300+ stores without drive-thrus

The restaurant wants to have a bigger impact in urban areas where millennial populations are exploding.

The new cantina-style spots will be mostly in Detroit, Pittsburgh, Nashville and NY with plans to open at least 50 in Manhattan, according to the report.

Taco bell plans to ditch the drive-through and serve alcohol at 300 new locations, as part of its expansion into urban markets, the fast food chain announced. While the loss of drive-thrus could be devastating to the perennial fast-food diner, Taco Bell promises to serve alcohol at these new locations. It's new cantina-style restaurants already feature beer, wine and sangria, and frozen drinks with rum, vodka or tequila.

Some cantina locations have already been opened in locations such as Las Vegas.

Big cities like Detroit, Pittsburgh, Nashville, and NY will have the Cantinas created to express the local vibes with artwork, open kitchens, and digital menu boards.

It's a first in the US for Taco Bell, which is owned by Louisville, Kentucky-based Yum Brands Inc.

Neil Borkan, the franchisee operating the Chicago Taco Bell told USA Today that the idea was a good one.

But you can't just take something like the drive-thru away and give nothing back in return.

This as Taco Bell plans some major changes which include opening three hundred fifty new restaurants by 2022.
