Target Corp to increase its minimum wage

26 September, 2017, 00:46 | Author: Kristen Ingram
  • Target boosting workers' minimum wage to $11 an hour

That puts Target's pace ahead of all but the most economically progressive areas: Massachussetts and Washington both have an $11 minimum, and several major cities - Seattle, San Francsico, Los Angeles, and NY - have passed ordinances to gradually raise the local minimum to $15 an hour. The company said the $11 hourly wage tops the minimum wage in 48 states and matches the minimum in MA and Washington.

The increases will apply to the 100,000 seasonal workers employed in Target's 1,800 stores.

Target is giving its workers a raise.

Target responded aggressively to stagnating sales numbers by cutting prices, remodeling stores and prioritizing e-commerce improvements. Global Positioning System have all boosted their own hourly pay for workers.

Minimum wage in OH is set at $8.15 an hour.

The announcement comes amid the turbulence of an increasingly tight labor market and a year that has seen the big box retailer's stock fall by 19 percent. That number is well above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 and approaches the highest minimum wages set by some cities in recent years.

But how many will follow in Target's $15-an-hour footsteps?

The new $11 an hour rate exceeds every state except MA and Washington, which both have an $11 hourly minimum, as well as the District of Columbia, which is set at $11.50.

Target CEO Brian Cornell said on a call with reporters that the minimum wage increase is an example of the significant investments outlined at the company's February investor day, including investments in digital infrastructure, data and supply chain.

On average, Target employs 160 team members per store and offers them career planning and development opportunities.
