Johnson, for his part, was asked whether he regrets his recent praise of Suu Kyi in light of her tepid response to the attacks on Rohingya villages by security forces, which she has framed as anti-terrorism operations.

The United Nations appealed Thursday for massive help for the almost 400,000 who fled to Bangladesh, amid concern the number could keep rising unless Myanmar ends what critics denounce as "ethnic cleansing".

Johnson also called on Myanmar's de facto leader to use her "moral capital" to highlight the plight of the Rohingyas.

"With respect to the horrors that we are witnessing occurring in Burma, I think it is a defining moment in many ways for this new emerging democracy, although it is a power-sharing arrangement".

"I yield to no one in my admiration of what she stood for and the way she fought for democracy", said Johnson, the foreign secretary, on Thursday at a joint press conference with USA secretary of state Rex Tillerson.

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau Wednesday urged Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi to end the violence which has seen almost 380,000 Rohingya Muslims flee to neighboring Bangladesh.

After the UN Security Council held closed consultations on the violence against the Rohingya Muslim minority in Myanmar, the president of the UNSC voices the states' concern over the situation in the country.

The Kentucky lawmaker said her civilian government has little control over Myanmar's military and the nation's path to a more democratic government will take time.

He added: "This violence must stop, this persecution must stop".

"It is vital for her to make clear that this is an abomination and that those people will be allowed back to Burma - and that preparation is being made and the abuse of their human rights and the killings will stop".

McConnell said Suu Kyi's position in the government was "exceedingly difficult" and that as a civilian, she had virtually no authority over the military.
