  • President Trump at a dinner with Latin American leaders

Trump signaled that the United States was prepared to take further action against the country, and urged Latin American leaders to do the same.

At a dinner with Latin American leaders on the fringes of the U.N. General Assembly, Trump said the Venezuelan people were starving and their country was collapsing.

"Maduro has inflicted bad pain and suffering on good people of his country", Trump said during a speech before the United Nations General Assembly.

"As responsible neighbors and friends of the Venezuelan people, our goal must be to help them regain their freedom, recover their country, and restore their democracy", he added.

In the months before the July election, violent protests erupted in the streets of Caracas, the country's capital, and the government's approval has fallen amid severe food and medicine shortages.

But he did not repeat an earlier threat to consider military options to pressure Venezuela, a day after dining with the leaders of four Latin American countries who made clear they would not support such action.

Venezuela has collapsed under the repressive socialist regime of President Nicholas Maduro.

"We are here to discuss the growing crisis in Venezuela", Trump began.

"The United States has taken important steps to hold the regime accountable".

'This situation is completely unacceptable and we can not stand by and watch.

"I ask every country represented here today to be prepared to do more to address this very real crisis".

The meeting was attended by Colombia's Juan Manuel Santos, Brazil's Michel Temer, Panama's Juan Carlos Varela and Argentina's vice president Gabriela Michetti.

A dozen Latin American foreign ministers plan to meet at the United Nations on Wednesday to discuss possible new measures to address the Venezuelan crisis.

The Venezuelan government's statement criticized specifically the Colombian president's position. Several prominent opposition mayors have been removed or ordered arrested by the Supreme Court. "We want it to happen very soon".
