Catalonia's residents protest against the independence referendum at Plaza Urquinaona in Barcelona, APA reports quoting Sputnik.

Previous opinion polls show that Catalonia's independence is supported by 41 percent of its residents, with 49 percent against it, and while as much as 80 percent of Catalans are in favor of the referendum, a lot of them believe that the vote should be agreed upon with the central government in Madrid.

The vote is scheduled to proceed despite fierce opposition from Madrid, including seizure of millions of ballot papers, arrests of Catalan election officials, censorship of referendum websites, and heavy daily fines for election board members as long as the vote moves forward.

While independence leaders in Barcelona have called on the European Union to condemn Madrid's "repressive action", the European Commission has said they only respect Spain's "constitutional order".

Parents and pupils were occupying the schools so police could not dismantle polling stations in them.

However, despite the referendum being forbidden the regional government is determined it will go ahead.

The central government in Madrid said on Saturday that 1,300 of 2,315 designated voting stations have been sealed off by police, who have been mobilised in the thousands in the region. That appears to underscore the reality that several thousand police can't really "stop" this vote.

A poll conducted by The National, a Scottish daily in favor of its own independence from Britain, and carried out over three weeks through Thursday, showed that with the Spanish boycott against the referendum in place, 62% of voters said they were energized to turn out. He said other parents planned to do the same.

But, other polls have indicated that the 7.5 million Catalans are divided on the question of independence. Waving Spanish flags, they chanted "Viva Espana", "Spanish unity" and "Catalonia is Spain".

In an interview with AFP, Puigdemont insisted that his government had "everything in place so that everything takes place normally", vowing that supporters of the referendum would not "go home" or give up on their rights.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for FC Barcelona if Catalonia gets its independence.

The Spanish government has promised to halt the referendum.

Several officers from the Civil Guard state police, or Guardia Civil, had earlier on Saturday raided the Catalan technology and communications centre where the software for the electronic counting system is held.

Despite the tension in the region, demonstrations by independence campaigners have been largely peaceful.

Friday also saw a judge order media giant Google to remove an application giving information about the outlawed referendum.

Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont told Reuters in an interview, however: "Everything is prepared at the more than 2,000 voting points so they have ballot boxes and voting slips, and have everything people need to express their opinion".
