It is reported that 30GB of data was stolen, after the network of a small Australian defence contractor was breached.

The Australian Cyber Security Centre said the information released by the ASD staffer, who works for the centre, was commercially sensitive but unclassified.

The hack, which came to light in a threat report from the Australian Cyber Security Center, infiltrated the unidentified company's computer network in July 2016.

ASD when they investigated the hack found a China Chopper remote shell, a backdoor commonly used by Chinese hackers, and Clarke said that ASD found that the Alf hacker had been attempting to use this exploit on a number of Australian IT companies.

Speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corp, the country's Defense Industry Minister Christopher Pyne said, "It could be a state actor, a non-state actor". It could be a state actor or a non-state actor.

The aerospace engineering firm in question had an IT department consisting of just one person who had been working there for nine months.

Mr Clarke said the information hacked on the new Navy ships included a diagram in which you could zoom in down to the captain's chair and see it was one metre away from the navigation chair.

The hack was discovered by a major Defence contractor.

"The compromise was extensive and extreme", Mr Clarke said.

"In November 2016, the ACSC became aware that a malicious cyber adversary had successfully compromised the network of a small Australian company with contracting links to national security projects", the report stated.

Earlier this week, it emerged Australia has been subjected to 47,000 cyber incidents in the last 12 months - a 15% increase on the previous year.

However, he added that the incident was a "salutary reminder" about cyber security.

"Fortunately, the data that was taken was commercial data, not military data, but it is still very serious and we will get to the bottom of it". "This means that, in the inevitability of a breach occurring, the data to which hackers can gain access is constrained".

Dan Slattery, senior information security analyst at tech security firm Webroot, said that the report should worry both the public and private sectors.

"Security thinking needs to change; organisations need to move away from the concept of owned and unowned networks or infrastructure and consider only users, applications and secure access - and the security industry must facilitate that shift".
