Hurricane Ophelia Moving At Snail's Pace To Northeast

  • Winds of over 120kph set to batter the country when Hurricane Ophelia reaches Ireland

Ophelia may not threaten the US - but it could move near the Azores islands, and the National Hurricane Center on Thursday cautioned those in the islands to keep an eye on the storm.

Yellow weather warnings have been issued across Ireland, with Hurricane Ophelia expected to reach the British Isles as a post-tropical storm in the early hours of Monday. "That's unusually warm for this time of year, and it could be these warm temperatures combining with Atlantic cold air that's causing this windstorm to be as strong as it is".

The Weather Channel says the storm could be a threat to Ireland and parts of the United Kingdom early next week.

The storm tied a record for the most consecutive storms to reach hurricane force, meteorologist Philip Klotzbach of Colorado State University said. Hurricane Season does not officially end until November 30th.

Additionally, the 2017 hurricane season has been busy - there were two Category 5 storms: Irma and Maria.

Once the hurricane arrives following its journey across the Atlantic Ocean it is expected to bring winds of up to 70mph.

The last time so many named storms in a row became hurricanes was in 1893, he said.

Met Office forecaster Alex Burkhill said: "Ophelia became a hurricane overnight and the forecast track takes it eastwards towards Iberia for the weekend". But that will not have a significant impact on its overall strength as it nears Europe, as Ophelia is expected to have winds of up to 75 miles per hour.
