In a letter dated September 27, Carolina Pena, the center's human resources director, wrote the facility was unable to notify the state of the layoffs sooner "due to unforeseen business circumstances that occurred after the impact of Hurricane Irma", the paper reported.

The Florida nursing home where 12 elderly residents died in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma has shut down and laid off its staff. Eight had died before the home was evacuated, and four more since then.

A couple in their 90s died within a month of each other in the U.S. after the nursing home they were in became a deadly hot box after Hurricane Irma.

Franco lived only 26 days after her husband of 61 years, Miguel Antonio Franco, died along with seven other residents in the first run of deaths.

Police are including Mrs. Franco's death as part of the criminal investigation against the nursing home, according to Miranda Grossman, a spokeswoman for the Hollywood Police Department.

Cecilia Franco would be the 13th death linked to the nursing home.

The nursing home and rehabilitation center is now just a homicide investigation crime scene after the state revoked the facility's license on September 20 and the facility laid off all 245 workers the same day. Hours earlier, Grossmah had reported the 13th fatality, identifying her as 90-year-old Cecilia Franco.

No one has been charged. Last week, the facility let go of 245 workers, including doctors, nurses, therapists and others.

Despite multiple calls between the nursing home and state authorities, the facility did not report its patients were in danger or they needed to be evacuated, according to a report last week by the office of Gov. Rick Scott.
