  • Microsoft shuts down Groove Music and cuts deal with Spotify instead

Microsoft announced plans today to discontinue the company's Groove Music Pass music streaming service, and music purchases in the Windows Store.

Microsoft launched the service back in 2012 when it acquired Zune Music and rebranded it as Xbox Music, and later to Groove Music in 2015, shortly before it launched Windows 10.

Microsoft's attempting at providing its name-loyal users a music streaming service will be over as of December 31. Continuing subscriptions will be refunded, while the Groove Music app will transition into fulfilling the role of a simple media player.

For customers who continue to use Groove Music to manage and play their music collection, Microsoft has promised that it will continue to invest in and update the Groove Music app into the future. Groove Music will join the many indie apps and platforms that have called it quits in the wake of Spotify's dominance, and it won't be the last.

Announcing the closure of Groove Music, Microsoft said customers wanted "access to the best streaming service, the largest catalogue of music, and a variety of subscriptions".

To successfully export your Groove Music selection, you'll need to use the latest version of the app. Existing users will receive a 60 day free trial of Spotify Premium. After December 31, 2017, the Groove Music app will lose of its core functionality, including the ability to stream, purchase, and download music.

Later this year, Microsoft will close down its Groove Music Pass and the company will stop selling music via the Windows Store.

Instead, Microsoft will attempt to foist Spotify on Windows 10 users instead. In that sense, you could see this move coming: why make a big deal out of supporting a competing offering on your game console? However, Pandora does not truly compete with services like Spotify because the former has still not been able to convert its free users into paying customers. Groove Music Pass is effectively doing the same PlayStation Music did in turning over streaming music to Spotify.

Windows users have no shortage of alternative music streaming options.
