  • Former Ballon d'Or winner, George Weah Wins Liberia Presidential Election'

"It's not often that you have a former player who becomes a president of a country".

Earlier on Thursday, observers from the Economic Community of West African States urged the electoral commission to speed up the release of provisional results to "prevent further anxiety", according to a statement read to reporters. That year, he reached the run-off but lost to the current president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Former soccer star George Weah, Vice President Joseph Boakai, former rebel leader Prince Johnson and former Coca-Cola vice president Alexander Cummings were leading in various parts of the country, local media reported. Aside from presidential elections, 73 members of the House of Representatives will also be chosen.

If no candidate wins 50 percent of the presidential vote, a run-off between the top two contenders will be held on November 7. In one case, hundreds of people with registration cards spent the day demanding to vote in Bong County after poll workers there said their names were not on voter rolls.

About 2.2 million Liberians, slightly less than half of the country's population, registered to vote.

"This is an important step toward achieving Liberia's first peaceful transfer of power from one democratically-elected head of state to another in decades".

Vice-President Joseph Boakai and footballer George Weah are seen as the frontrunners to succeed the Nobel Peace Prize victor Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who led the country's recovery from Ebola and civil war.

"All of these people are saying they want change and improvement, and that explains why nearly all of the candidates are presenting themselves as candidates for change", Fomunyoh said.
