  • Opposition in overdrive

"Nawaz Sharif has made a decision to appear before the court in National Accountability Bureau (NAB) references in order to expose the targeted trial", Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah said and added justice is being "compromised" in the case.

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's indictment on charges of corruption has been deferred by a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court till October 9.

The Bill has now been referred back to the lower house of Parliament to pass the amended draft law.

The PML-N leaders will hold a meeting of its general council to elect a new party president - a day after central working committee approved an amendment to the party's constitution, paving Nawaz's way to lead the party.

This is effectively being seen as a move to ease Sharif into the position.

In protest some opposition lawmakers tore up paper copies of the Election Bill 2017, passed by the Senate last week, that allows Sharif to become the party president again despite his disqualification by the court. Khawaja Harris, Sharif's counsel, informed the court during the hearing that the Sharif children were busy tending to their convalescing mother in London and will appear in court once she is better.

In addition, the court issued non-bailable warrants against Sharif's sons Hassan and Hussain, his daughter Mariyum Nawaz Sharif and her husband (Retd) Captain Safdar.

The Islamabad Accountability Court on Monday adjourned hearing of references against Nawaz Sharif and his children till October 09 while issuing arrest warrants for Hassan, Hussain and Maryam Nawaz and Capt (R) Muhammad Safdar.

However, the former PM has not been charged formally.

Pakistan daily, Dawn, reported that on Monday the ruling PML-N has cleared the way for Sharif to be re-elected as the party president.

Sharif had appeared before and accountability court on Monday morning after which he reached Punjab House for an informal advisory session.

Earlier, there had been reports that the ousted prime minister would fly to London on Thursday to be with his wife, Kulsoom, who has been undergoing treatment for throat cancer at a private hospital in London.
