  • The genocide of Rohingya Muslims

Newly arrived Rohingya Muslim from Myanmar gather in an open space to receive rations in Jadipara, Bangladesh, Monday, Oct. 02, 2017.

The Security Council can refer Myanmar to the International Criminal Court, as was done with Sudan and Libya.

The trip was arranged after Myanmar State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's diplomatic briefing last month on the Rakhine State situation in which she said despite a large number of people fleeing the area, there were people who stayed behind. They were joined by Rakhine state and central government officials and ministers on a government-sponsored tour of areas of Maungdaw and Ratheduang townships, the nexus of recent strife.

Myanmar and Bangladesh have agreed to establish a "working group" that aims to repatriate over half a million Rohingya Muslims who've fled to Bangladesh during army attacks against their villages and civilians.

We are shocked about violence directed at the Rohingya people of Myanmar (formerly Burma) and condemn this violent action, which has been called a "textbook" example of ethnic cleansing against a religious minority.

The Myanmar Hindu Central Organization Thanantapala will ask the government to grant permission to take the Hindu children to the commercial capital Yangon where they will be given shelter, said Kyaw Thu, the organization's secretary. However, Myanmar government refuse to allow United Nations investigators into the country to conduct an investigation into the situation.

Diplomats and United Nations officials visited conflict-torn areas of northern Rakhine for the first time since more than 500,000 self-identifying Rohingya Muslims, hundreds of ethnic Rakhine and others fled the area since Aug 25.

"The two sides have agreed to a proposal to set up a joint working group to coordinate the repatriation process". Win Myat Aye, Myanmar's union and social welfare minister, told UNHCR's Executive Committee meeting in Geneva: "Our next immediate priority is to bring back the refugees who have fled to Bangladesh", Reuters reported.

"We have received news about possible terror attacks in ethnic villages in south and north of Maungdaw", he said.

Bangladesh authorities fear their presence could revive communal tensions between the local population and the tribal minority.
