Sturridge warned by Souness that he faces six-week Liverpool snub

  • Watch Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness analyse Liverpool's defending for Newcastle's equaliser

Liverpool are better than their results of the past month.

Well, they got what they wanted, but only because Liverpool gifted them a goal that you would not be happy with if your 12-year-old kid was playing as a central defender on a Sunday morning in a Dublin park.

But Daniel Sturridge looks off the pace and you can not rely on magic from Philippe Coutinho or Sadio Mane every week to cover up the holes in the defence. His goals, alongside those of his strike partner Luis Suarez, fired Liverpool to the brink of their first ever Premier League titl, before they slipped at the final hurdle, surrendering to eventual champions, Manchester City.

It means they look to already have lost touch with the league leaders.

Jamie Carragher once settled the nerves of Steven Gerrard after the Liverpool legend feared for his place following the signing of Charlie Adam.

"The league doesn't lie", Gerrard admitted on Sky this week.

Souness added: "When you're in such a good passing team as Liverpool are, for the people at the back, when the ball goes into midfield and beyond, they start to admire the game". It is a question the manager should be answering and not me, but he doesn't seem to have that answer.

"As a fan, I am looking forward to watching them in those games because I think they can bounce back".

"We have, obviously, our hard moments; other teams will have hard moments".

It cancelled out a superb strike from Philippe Coutinho to put Liverpool ahead not long before, and showcased the best and worst sides of the Reds' current game.

"I am very, very confident that this season can be a success, whether that be in the league or in Europe or the FA Cup. A lack of concentration has cost Liverpool and I'll say it again, whenever Liverpool conceded chances, they are always "big chances", and this is exactly the same, a man running through on your goal".

The good news is that while Liverpool look like they've lost touch with the league leaders, they're still in the thick of the top four race-and a win against Manchester United after the global break would go a long way towards making even one of those league leaders, the two Manchester clubs, appear within reach.

"With one good result or a couple of good results, they will find themselves back in the top four".
