London Mayor Sadiq Khan released a statement on the incident, saying, "A number of people have been injured in an incident involving a auto in Exhibition Road, South Kensington".

"Enquiries have established that this incident is not terrorist related and I'd like to thank those who came to assist the injured".

Police said the arrested man was among nine people who were taken to hospital to be treated for a range of head or leg injuries.

But Scotland Yard later confirmed the incident, which occurred shortly after 2.20pm, was "not being treated as a terror-related incident" and a man had been arrested over a traffic collision. He is now in custody at a London police station.

One witness, who gave his name only as Leonard, said: "I was near South Kensington station and there were many police officers".

The Natural History Museum is in the busy area of South Kensington, popular among the city's residents and tourists.

Workers in a cafe near the Natural History Museum say they fled the scene in fear.

The driver of the vehicle was pinned on the ground by a number of people before tag pouches arrived within minutes.

A BBC reporter at the scene said she could see a auto had stopped diagonally across the road, surrounded by a crowd of people with one or two on the ground.

Video footage from the scene shows police guarding a cordon at the scene. London Ambulance Service is also at the scene to treat those injured. Police said none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening.

The museum had earlier said on Twitter it was working with police after "a serious incident" outside and would provide more information later.

A witness said there were large numbers of police and paramedics at the scene although the atmosphere appeared calm.

Britons in general, and Londoners in particular, have been jumpy after a string of extremist attacks this year, including deadly attacks using vehicles to hit pedestrians on Westminster Bridge and London Bridge.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May was being updated on the incident, her office informed.
