While you may not know which kids have food allergies, there is a way to offer safe treats for all to enjoy.

That's why the Food Allergy Research & Education organization wants Halloween lovers to go teal in October.

Halloween can be spooky and creepy but it should still be safe for all trick-or-treaters.

"Halloween is pretty much centered around candy and one out of 13 kids in America have a food allergy".

The Hess family gets pumpkins donated to them or they buy them out of their own pocket book.

That is where the teal pumpkins come into play.

This year, FARE sent Teal Pumpkin Project kits to 225 elementary schools in underserved neighborhoods, including to neighborhoods in San Diego, to drum up community engagement.

Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) works on behalf of the 15 million Americans with food allergies, including all those at risk for life-threatening anaphylaxis. For example, consider a child with a peanut or tree nut allergy.

When most people picture trick-or-treating on Halloween they think of chocolates and sweets being handed out. "Children with food allergies often feel "excluded" from simple things, such as classroom parties or trick or treating, simply because they can not eat something". FARE's mission is to improve the quality of life and the health of individuals with food allergies, and to provide them hope through the promise of new treatments.

More and more teal pumpkins are popping up on front porches including in CT.

Last year, over 18,000 households from all 50 states participated in the project. "There's some little treats or toys I can have that are non-food because with allergies you can't just have random candy", Hess said.

Halloween is Tuesday and if you haven't painted your pumpkins teal yet, don't worry, you still have some time. The "Teal Pumpkin Project" was started by the Food Allergy Community in East Tennessee (FACET).

Notino continued, "The Teal Pumpkin Project not only lets the child with an allergy know that a safe alternative is available to them but shows that the homeowners took the initiative to "include" all children".
