Trump tells Puerto Rico residents

Puerto Ricans were also angered by Trump's delay in finally waiving a United States law that bars foreign-flagged ships from delivering aid to USA ports including Puerto Rico.

While increasing amounts of water, food and medicine has been arriving on the island of 3.4 million people as a distribution bottleneck eases, many - particularly in remote and mountainous areas - remain desperate for water and other necessities.

It is estimated that telecommunications has returned to 30% of the island, nearly half the supermarkets have reopened, and more than half of gas stations are back in business. Most of the island still does not have running water or electricity, its hospitals now have to operate under such challenging conditions that it's been compared to a "war", and the island is literally cash-strapped: Its ATMs have no electricity to operate, so, as The New York Times reported, "You're broke even if you have money". After a deadly terror attack in London in June, Trump singled out London Mayor Sadiq Khan, suggesting he wasn't taking the attacks seriously enough.

Still, Cruz, in her CNN appearance, left little doubt that she is looking to the White House for help.

YulÃn Cruz tweeted shortly after Trump, saying that the only goal was "saving lives". "I'm not surprised by the show she is putting on..."

Natural disasters sometimes bring moments of rare bipartisan solidarity.

Cruz on Friday also bristled at suggestions that the relief effort had been well-coordinated.

Bill Weir gave money to a tearful woman.

Mr Rossello responded on Twitter to Mr Trump's action: "Thank you @POTUS".

San Juan's mayor said there's "no time for politics" in Puerto Rico's recovery efforts from Hurricane Maria, hours after getting blasted by President Donald Trump on Twitter.

That prompted a sharp retort from San Juan's mayor in a CNN interview. Although unsurprising and quite predictable, it is pathetic that the President has made a decision to attack - with the not so subtle veil of racism and sexism - those desperately begging for his help in their hour of need.

Meanwhile medicines are running low and obtaining fuel is an ongoing struggle, said Dr. David Lenihan, president of Ponce Health Sciences University, the only medical clinic now serving southern Puerto Rico. "All Puerto Ricans work hard", he said. "It's been wiped out".

"Now Congress must repeal this law to aid long-term recovery", he said.

Maria devastated several islands in the region, including Dominica and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Trump touted the federal government's response on the island, saying the workers there are doing "a fantastic job". "That's why we're here, that's why we're staying until people are back in their homes, the schools are open, and everyone is safe".

President Donald Trump is lashing out at the mayor of Puerto Rico's capital city in a war of words over recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria smashed into the US territory. Puerto Rico's congressional delegate also traveled with the group.

He then retweeted videos from the military and other emergency responders working in Puerto Rico.
