Twitter noted that the 201 accounts were not properly registered as advertisers on the platform, and that it will continue its investigation into the matter and take action if it sees other accounts violating its terms of service.

After a weekend when Americans took to #social media to debate President Trump's admonishment of N.F.L. players who do not stand for the national anthem, a network of Twitter accounts suspected of links to Russian Federation seized on both sides of the issue with hashtags such as #boycottnfl, #standforouranthem and #takeaknee.

"Google is conducting a broad internal investigation to determine whether Russian-linked entities used its ads or services to try to manipulate voters ahead of the U.S. election", The Wall Street Journal reported late on Friday.

RT's Twitter accounts "promoted 1,823 Tweets that definitely or potentially targeted the USA market", Twitter said in a blog post. Twitter said it examined efforts by foreign agents to interfere with the election after Facebook indicated it found 450 accounts that appeared to have been used for this goal.

In a blog post, Twitter revealed that it has informed the lawmakers that it has suspended 22 accounts that corresponded to the list of accounts submitted by Facebook. that were potentially linked to Russian Federation. It was unclear exactly how many accounts were found to be violating rules and suspended.

Twitter said some of the ads, or promoted tweets, aimed to deceive voters by telling them they could "text to vote", which has no basis in fact. Facebook also found another $50,000 spent on "potentially politically related ad spending".

Democratic Senator Mark Warner called Twitter's presentation "deeply disappointing" and "inadequate".

Warner in remarks to reporters called Twitter's statements "deeply disappointing" and "inadequate on nearly every level".

Social media users might be shocked to hear just how much Russian Federation has been influencing their feeds.

A study released Thursday meanwhile found the campaign to spread "junk news" during the 2016 presidential election via Twitter appeared to target key states that were the most contested.

One of the reasons for the inaccuracy, Twitter said, is that just two percent of all tweets contain geolocation data.
