Police sources say the suspect shouted "Allahu Akbar" in Arabic as he carried out his attack on the women, aged 17 and 20, at Marseille's main railway station.

The area around Saint Charles train station at Marseille's main train station has been cordoned off and the station has been evacuated.

The southern French port city of Marseille has seen another violent, high-profile incident - the third in as many months - with Sunday's events unfolding at the Saint-Charles train station. The attacker was shot and killed by French security services, Sputnik reported.

In August, a man driving a van killed one person and seriously injured another after ploughing into a bus stop in Marseille, raising fears of another terror incident.

The spokesperson for the Paris Prosecutor's office confirmed to NBC News their "the anti-terrorist section" had taken over the investigation.

The attacker was known to police for delinquency, though not followed by anti-terrorist teams, according to France Info radio.

A gunman drove a heavy truck into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in the city of Nice previous year, killing 86 people and injuring scores more. Collomb called both victims "young women" and added that the quick-acting soldiers possibly saved others from becoming victims of the attack.
