One of the attendees at that meeting, J.D. Gordon, recalled that Sessions quickly "shut him down and said, 'We're not going to do that'". "And I have not been improperly influenced and would not be improperly influenced".

That prompted an angry backlash from Sessions. "The president speaks his mind he is bold and direct about what he says". The people elected him.

"I pushed back, I'll just say it that way", Sessions said under questioning. He said he mentioned in passing to Sessions that he was preparing to visit Russian Federation and Sessions "had no reaction whatsoever". The then-Alabama senator was the first U.S. senator to back Trump.

Sessions also said he had no challenge to Page's recollection of those events.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions told lawmakers that the Department of Justice is investigating 27 leaks of classified information. In March, Sessions released a statement recusing himself.

Sessions testified that he now remembers the meeting Papadopoulos, but his memory about conversations is limited.

Sessions testified at an open hearing in front of the House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, and Conyers chose to base his first line of questioning on the following Trump tweets.

But Sessions said the DOJ requires a high standard of evidence to appoint a special counsel, which means he may not grant that request. In his testimony before Congress Tuesday, Sessions tried to account for this apparent discrepancy.

"My answers have not changed", Sessions said. "I have always tried to answer the questions fairly and accurately".

"But I will not accept and reject accusations that I have ever lied under oath. That is a lie".

Mr Page's trip has drawn scrutiny in inquiries into Russia's meddling in the 2016 U.S. election.

Democratic members of the House Judiciary Committee advised Sessions in a letter last week that they meant to press him on what they said were "inconsistencies" between the attorney general's past statements and the new revelations. He then faced the Senate intelligence committee about the inconsistencies over the summer.

Since that hearing, Mueller unsealed a guilty plea from a campaign foreign policy staffer, Papadopoulos, for false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Papadopolous pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about his contacts with Russians. Trump has repeatedly voiced frustration about the Mueller probe and publicly criticized Sessions, stoking speculation he might be fired.

All are Republicans who have apparently copped to smoking pot.

The research came through an opposition firm, Fusion GPS, that was first paid by a conservative publication and later paid by Democrats.

"To announce recusal in any investigation would reveal the existence of that investigation, and the top ethics officials have advised me I should not do so", he said. [John] Danforth took over that investigation as special counsel - and Mr. Mueller.

Conyers noted the DOJ's letter and asked, "Are you recused from investigations that involve Secretary Clinton?"

In response, Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd wrote that Sessions had "directed senior federal prosecutors to evaluate certain issues raised in your letters", and those prosecutors would "report directly to the Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General, as appropriate, and will make recommendations as to whether any matters not now under investigation should be opened, whether any matters now under investigation require further resources, or whether any matters merit the appointment of a Special Counsel".

The Justice Department sought to address those concerns in its letter, with Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd saying that the department "will never evaluate any matter except on the facts and the law". "Each of those are pretty special, factual situations", Sessions said, "and we will use the proper standards".

Conyers began by projecting three tweets Trump posted in recent months calling on the DOJ to investigate Hillary Clinton.
