"This is a childhood dream come true", the Olympian posted on Twitter late Monday.

While wearing her traditional Islamic hijab, Muhammad competed as a sabre fencer in the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Barbie and Mattel have been shifting their image to become more racially diverse via their You Can Be Anything campaign.

The first hijab-wearing Barbie doll has been released to honour a fencer who became the first United States woman to wear the Islamic headscarf while competing at the Olympics. "So to be in this moment, as a U.S. Olympian, to have Mattel, such a global brand, diversify their toy line to include a Barbie doll that wears a hijab is very moving to me". This series of dolls pushing for the recognition of women who violate the boundaries and inspiring the next generation of girls.

Past dolls have included gymnast Gabby Douglas and Selma director Ava DuVernay. Ibtihaj Muhammad's Barbie will be available sometime in 2018. Now, she's making history again by getting a Barbie doll made in her honour.

The Barbie, designed in her likeness, has full fencing gear, including mask and sabre, with sneakers on her feet and a hijab around her head.

The daughter of a police detective and a teacher, Muhammad grew up with four siblings in Maplewood and discovered fencing when she was 13 years old, winning medals and accolades until she qualified for the Olympics in 2016.

The importance of representing the first-ever hijab-wearing doll is not lost on Muhammad. This week, Mattel introduced the first Barbie doll to wear a hijab. It's a feat she described on Monday, when the doll was unveiled, as "amazing".

Now that Mattel has made a doll for girls like her, Muhammad knows it will make a difference: "I hope that little girls of color across the heartland will be inspired to embrace what makes them unique", she said of girls who will play with this Barbie. I'm also really big into eyeliner.

A doll that looks like Ebtehaj issued in the series "shero" (Barbie Shero), which breaks the standard pattern of beauty Barbie.
