  • Pakistan bride accidentally poisons 13 family members in failed bid to kill husband

Forced marriages are common in Pakistan.

The local media say the bride had tried unsuccessfully to flee her marital home and return to her parents. According to UPI, the alleged lover is a cousin whom Bibi had hoped to marry.

Reports add that Aasia Bibi planned the poisoned milk due to her arranged marriage.

Thirteen members of the family died and 14 others fell severally sick before Asiya was arrested. The milk was then turned into a batch of lassi, a popular yogurt drink, and served to his extended family.

Though the tainted drinks initially only killed eight people when they were served last Thursday, the death toll has been rising. Just in September, a newlywed couple in Punjab mysteriously died after apparently swallowing poison pills, The Express Tribune reported. Shortly after their wedding, police said she attempted to escape to her parents' house.

A senior police officer explained more: "Aasia was forced to marry Amjad against her will".

District police chief Sohail Habib Tajak said Wednesday a judge allowed police to question Bibi for two weeks. She's believed to have confessed to the crime while in custody.

Bibi reportedly first claimed that a lizard had fallen into the milk, poisoning it.

Also Wednesday, in the eastern city of Lahore, a brother shot and killed his sister who had recently wedded a man of her choice without consent from her family in the latest case of so-called honor killings.
