  • Children shot an Northern California elementary school

A shooting that began at a home and ended at an elementary school Tuesday in northern California claimed the lives of at least five people, including the suspected gunman, said a sheriff's office spokesman.

Authorities have recovered a semi-automatic rifle and two handguns after the shootings in the rural subdivision described on its website as a "quiet private country community" where "the people are friendly and the pace is relaxed".

The school is now clear, and all other students have been brought to a safe location. "This guy has been insane, and he's been threatening us and everything".

"I know that we have Medivaced a number of students", Johnston said, referring to the use of helicopters for the emergency transport of victims to hospitals.

One student at the elementary school was hit by gunfire and transported to the local hospital for treatment, Johnston said. Mercy Dignity Health confirmed that the hospital has received three patients.

The shooter was killed by law enforcement.

He said the shooter also stole his truck. "It was right about 8 a.m. we had multiple shots fired in Rancho Tehama", Johnston said.

"We are cooperating with local law enforcement - we don't have any confirmed information at this point", but a statement from the superintendent will be forthcoming when they know more, she said.

A neighbor of the shooter spoke with the media and said that the suspect was acting "crazy", and that the suspect threatened him and his roommate before stealing his truck.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and children screaming at an elementary school about five miles down a road from where the shooting is believed to have started.

The Sheriff has enacted the officer involved shooting protocol, and multiple agencies are involved.
