  • Drink up: Three cups of coffee a day 'may have health benefits'

Drinking moderate amounts of coffee - about three or four cups a day - is more likely to benefit our health than harm it, our latest research shows.

A new study which looked at almost 220 studies on this brew found that moderate coffee drinkers are likely to have reduced risk of diseases like cancer, cirrhosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It also decreases the risks of liver diseases, diabetes, some cancers, and dementia.

So says a review by British scientists of more than 200 studies on coffee consumption and health, published Wednesday in The BMJ, a British medical journal.

Drinking more than three cups a day was not associated with any risk of harm - however the benefits were found to be less pronounced. Umbrella reviews combine previous meta-analyses and give a high level summary of research findings.

"Is coffee good for you?"

What's more, they are calling for thorough clinical trials on coffee admission to discover more about the potential advantages to wellbeing.

Researchers from the University of Southampton found that the risk of heart disease is reduced by 15% and the chance of early death by 17%.

The greatest risk reduction was noticed for liver cirrhosis: "any versus no coffee consumption" was linked to a 39 percent lower risk of developing this condition.

The drink is more likely to ward off disease than to cause harm, according to the most comprehensive report yet conducted.

In a linked editorial, Eliseo Guallar at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health said while we can be assured coffee is generally safe, doctors should not recommend drinking it to prevent disease and people should not start for perceived health benefits.

"Factors, for example, age, regardless of whether individuals smoked or not and how much exercise they took could all have had an impact", he said.

There was less evidence for the effects of drinking decaffeinated coffee but it had similar benefits for a number of outcomes.

However, even with these caveats, "moderate coffee consumption seems remarkably safe, and it can be incorporated as part of a healthy diet by most of the adult population", he concludes.
