David Davis under fire over pledge for MPs' vote on Brexit deal

The Brexit deal will form a specific Act of Parliament, to be voted on by the Houses of Commons and Lords in early 2019.

The EU Withdrawal Bill, which formally converts all European Union (EU) legislation into United Kingdom law to ensure complete clarity on Brexit day "March 29, 2019", returns for a line by line scrutiny by lawmakers in what is referred to as the committee stage of the bill.

MPs will have their first chance to scrutinise the EU Withdrawal Bill, which would formally end Britain's membership of the European Union and transfer four decades of EU legislation into United Kingdom law.

Pro-EU MPs within the Conservative party are confident of a rebellion by up to 10 MPs, which could mean a major defeat for the government.

"We want to ensure that our new partnership with the European Union protects the mobility of workers and professionals".

Mr Davis confirmed MPs and peers will be given a take-it-or-leave-it choice on the Brexit deal, as he explained if Parliament rejects a withdrawal agreement, Britain will still leave the EU.

The City of London, home to global foreign exchange, bonds and fund management operations and to more banks than any other financial centre, faces upheaval as firms decide whether to shift jobs to continental Europe to keep serving customers there after Britain leaves the European Union in 2019.

Reacting to the Brexit Secretary's announcement, Ms Allen tweeted: "Pointless if we have enshrined a drop dead date in the Bill, & get a deal at 11th hour!"

"And also offers no safeguard if no deal is reached".

Labour's Chuka Umunna said on Twitter that Davis' concession was "totally insufficient: he gave no guarantee of a meaningful vote before 29 March 2019 and this doesn't cover the event of there being no deal".

Labour's shadow Brexit secretary Sir Keir Starmer branded Mr Davis's actions "a significant climbdown from a weak Government on the verge of defeat".

Meanwhile, former Tory constitution minister John Penrose welcomed the Government's stronger pledge on a parliamentary vote, but expressed continuing concerns over the use of so-called "Henry VIII powers" as provided by the EU Withdrawal Bill.

He said the government will introduce a new immigration bill next year setting out those plans in more detail.

"Ensuring that the financial services sector can attract the talent it needs to thrive is also vital as we leave the EU", Davis said.
