  • President Donald Trump's longtime bodyguard Keith Schiller will reportedly be questioned over a 2013 trip Trump took to Moscow

Clovis's lawyer confirmed to Bloomberg News that an unnamed "campaign supervisor" mentioned in the documents, who was in communication with Papadopoulos about his attempts to arrange a meeting between campaign officials and Russian representatives, is Clovis.

But the former Iowa talk radio host and political science professor contended in the letter to the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee's top Democrat, Debbie Stabenow (Mich.), that his time teaching and running for political office in the Hawkeye State steeped him in the field of agriculture.

President Donald Trump on Friday said he did not remember much about a meeting last year with a former campaign aide who pleaded guilty this month as part of a federal investigation into alleged Russian meddling in last year's US election campaign.

Court documents unsealed Monday revealed that Papadopoulos pleaded guilty in early October to making false statement to FBI investigators about his contacts with foreigners claiming to have high-level Russian connections.

Clovis, who now serves as the department's senior White House adviser, informed President Donald Trump of his decision in a letter dated Wednesday.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday evening.

Questions are swirling over Clovis' relationship with George Papadopoulos - the Trump campaign foreign policy adviser who has admitted to making a false statement to the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding his interactions with foreign officials close to the Russian government - and a trip Papadopoulos took during the election where he met with a Russian figure. He also testified that he was "not aware" of anyone affiliated with the Trump campaign communicating with the Russians. It was subsequently revealed that he had conversations with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Clovis has also argued in favor of "religious freedom" measures that would allow businesses to refuse to hire LGBTQ people by citing religious or moral objections to homosexuality or transgenderism.

In March 2016, Trump called Papadopoulos an "excellent guy" during an interview with The Washington Post's editorial board. At least two Democratic members of the Senate judiciary committee, Al Franken of Minnesota and Patrick Leahy of Vermont, have asked the FBI to investigate whether Sessions committed perjury during his confirmation hearings.

The Democratic senator said he did not know White House adviser Jared Kushner's role in the firing, and declined to weigh in on any potential wrongdoing on Kushner's part, including Kushner's multiple amendments to his security clearance form.

The email exchange could be significant in investigations into Russian election meddling.

At the Senate judiciary hearing last month, Sen.

Senate Republicans have not rushed to Sessions' defense but were less ruffled about his participation in the Papadopoulos meeting.

"Attorney General Sessions should come back before Congress and answer questions in light of recent revelations", said Senator Ron Wyden. Ron Wyden, a Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee.
