Egypt's Sisi vows fierce action against mosque attack amid massive condemnation

The Islamic State group's Egypt branch has killed hundreds of policemen and soldiers, and also civilians accused of working with the authorities, in attacks in the north of the Sinai peninsula, over the years.

US President Donald Trump: "Horrible and cowardly terrorist attack on innocent and defenseless worshipers in Egypt".

"The world can not tolerate terrorism, we must defeat them militarily and discredit the extremist ideology that forms the basis of their existence!", he wrote.

The border was scheduled to reopen for three days to allow travel from both sides, the agency said.

"I will get it all done, but what a mistake, in lives and dollars (6 trillion), to be there in the first place!"

President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi vowed to respond to the attack on al Rawdah mosque with "brute force".

A Health Ministry official told Al Jazeera TV that "there were many people inside the mosque - it's only a small mosque". The blast occurred during Friday prayers, when the complex was packed with worshipers.

Eyewitness told Ahram Online that improvised explosive devices were detonated and the gunmen then opened fire at worshippers at the mosque, which is affiliated with Sufi groups.

"We stand with Egyptians in their war against terrorism and against anyone who tries to harm the Egyptian national security", Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said in a statement.

Following the attack on the mosque in Egypt's Northern Sinai province on Friday which killed 235 and injured over 130, world leaders took to micro-blogging site Twitter to express their condolences and condemn the act of terror.

Worshippers were finishing Friday prayers at the mosque when a bomb exploded, witnesses said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas also strongly denounced the terror attack, voicing his solidarity with Egypt.
