Facebook: Send Us Nudes So We Can Fight Revenge Porn

  • Facebook suggests users upload nudes to avoid revenge porn

Once the nudes are inside Facebook's systems, the servers will "hash" the images, which means it'll create unique fingerprints for them.

Facebook has teamed up with the e-Safety Commissioner to protect your intimate photos in case your phone gets hacked or you and your soulmate weren't really made for each other because your now-ex is the type of jerk who would even consider posting revenge porn. They're storing the link and using artificial intelligence and other photo-matching technologies. CNBC reports Facebook's anti-revenge porn pilot program is available in the U.S., U.K., and Canada. If you're afraid a photo of yours might be shared on Facebook by, let's say, a excommunicated ex or a spurned spouse, you share that photo with Facebook, and they block that photo from ever showing up.

The giant social network partnered with a small Australian Government agency, according to ABC.au to prevent revenge porn using this program.

The strategy, now in Australia, is to have individuals upload their own naked photos into the messenger app so Facebook can tag it as non-consensual explicit media.

Facebook's software would create a "hash" - a digital fingerprint of the photo - so it can be recognized if it's uploaded, and automatically blocked.

"It would be like sending yourself your image in [an] email, but obviously this is a much safer, secure end-to-end way of sending the image without sending it through the ether", Julie says.

"As part of our continued efforts to better detect and remove content that violates our community standards, we're using image matching technology to prevent non-consensual intimate images from being shared on Facebook, Instagram, Facebook Groups and Messenger", Davis said.

Back in May, Facebook announced it was hiring thousands of new employees who will be specifically tasked with monitoring and removing flagged posts.

"The naked images are going to be sensitive information, so the user will probably need to express some consent on this, like clicking a box", she said. Nonetheless, Alex Stamos, Facebook chief security officer, said the company was improving its software in order to prevent such circumvention.

It has also been found that 10 percent of women under 30 have had someone threaten to leak their nudes online.

As a platform (in) directly responsible for the proliferation of revenge porn, Facebook is now trying to help put a stop to it.
