France pip South Africa to stage 2023 Rugby World Cup

In the unlikely event that the vote is a tie three ways, then South Africa will automatically go to the second round, and World Rugby president Bill Beaumont will have to eliminate either Ireland or France.

"We can not hide our desolation but, for the sake of rugby we wish the 2023 tournament hosts every success".

France received 24 votes to South Africa's 15 in the final round of voting.

Laporte toned down his cricitism after France were awarded the tournament, but admitted he believed there were aspects of the process he considered to have been unfair.

They hosted the soccer World Cup in 1998 and the European Championships in 2000 and 2016.

South Africa, which staged the tournament in 1995, winning it in their first appearance after missing the first two World Cups because of the apartheid sporting ban, had been favourites after coming out clearly on top of the evaluation report.

"We've won but it's really grass-roots rugby that has won", he added.

Episode 36 of The Hard Yards rugby podcast features Tiernan O'Halloran and James Downey, with Tadhg Furlong on South Africa. Unfortunately, the disappointing thing was that Scotland and Wales didn't support us.

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt had been convinced his side's record 30-3 thumping of the Springboks in Dublin on Saturday could swing the vote of World Rugby's member nations, but that hope has now been dashed.

Krige, who captained his country in 18 Tests, questioned why the World Rugby would go do and go against an independent audit.

"We did everything in our power to bring the tournament to South Africa and we expected to have that right confirmed".

Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby, stated the South Africa had accepted the result despite the disappointment.

"We produced a compelling bid document that earned the unanimous recommendation of the Rugby World Cup board".

Browne, who admitted the report had left him very surprised and disappointed, said evidently their vision and that of World Rugby as to how a World Cup should be hosted were worlds apart.
