  • Details Emerging After FSU Fraternity Member Found Dead

Mr. Thrasher said he had reviewed actions taken by other universities before he chose to enact a suspension across the Greek system. For the suspension to end, Thrasher said, there will "need to be a new normal for Greek life at the university". The university also banned alcohol at events with 700 other student organizations outside the Greek system.

The fraternity's national office suspended the FSU chapter's operations following his death, said Todd Shelton, a spokesman for Pi Kappa Phi. "I want to send a serious message, I really do", he said. "Unfortunately, we've got to take steps with our students, to make sure this never happens again".

The suspension comes after a 20 year old Florida State University fraternity pledge died after a night of drinking. "There must be a new culture, and our students but be full participants in creating it".

Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo says indicators suggest alcohol played a role in the junior's death, although they are waiting on an autopsy to confirm, reports CNN.

In a separate incident, 20-year-old Garrett John Marcy, a member of FSU's Phi Delta Theta chapter, was charged Monday with trafficking cocaine. No one has been arrested in connection with his death.

"I think it could be a little bit of a wake up call to kind of spread awareness that they need to take precautions on what's happening".

"I think hazing is a problem and alcohol is the basis of a lot of their events", she said.

The university has dozens of programs that work with Greek organizations to educate them on the values they are expected to reflect, providing tools and resources to assist student leaders and advisors in effectively managing their organizations.

"For me and a lot of the people who are entering, we're all pretty upset because we are trying to get the reputation back up", says Lila Pullo, a freshman who was supposed to be initiated into the Delta Gamma sorority.

John Armstrong, who served as president of Florida State's Beta Theta Pi chapter in 1998, said he had mixed feelings about Monday's announcement. FSU says the suspension will prohibit any organized chapter activities, including tailgates, new member events, chapter meetings, and any organization events including socials, intramural activities, and retreats. "They will have to participate in the solution".

Thrasher said fraternity and sorority members will continue to to live in their houses during the suspension.
