The 56-year-old actor-and-director - who became a household name playing Dr. Doug Ross in medical drama series "E.R.' from 1994 to 1999 - will star in and direct an adaptation of Joseph Heller's satirical novel 'Catch-22", Deadline reports. Luke Davies and David Michôd co-wrote the six-episode series and will serve as executive producers for the show, which has yet to be attached to a network. There is no network now attached to air the miniseries. The title Catch-22 refers to a specific instance that says if a pilot is unable to fly an aircraft he should resign, but if he is aware enough to resign due to mental illness he is fine to continue his duty.

The miniseries is set in Italy during World War II.

Richard Brown and Steve Golin will executive produce for Anonymous Content, while Clooney and Heslov executive produce on behalf of Smokehouse.

Clooney and Heslov are repped by CAA.

But George Clooney will soon be back on the small screen.

The dad of two will portray Colonel Cathcart, a group commander for the U.S. Army who will do anything to please his superiors, according to Variety. The actor has often chosen roles that undercut his Hollywood leading man good looks in charm - to balance out the bevy of roles which highlight them - often in collaboration with the Coen Brothers. Clooney has long proved himself a magnetic leading man, and a talented - if hit-or-miss - behind-the-scenes creator, and Catch-22 could provide him the ideal outlet for merging his whimsical tendencies with his eye for the dramatic.
