The FBI released its 2016 hate crime statistics report Monday.

About 57 percent of the 6,121 incidents reported to law enforcement were motivated by race or ethnicity, with the half of race-related crimes motivated by anti-black bias. The majority of racial hate crimes, about 50 percent, were "anti-Black or African American", while about one-in-five were "anti-White", and one-tenth were "anti-Hispanic or Latino".

Meanwhile, 21% of crimes were motivated by religion and almost 18% by a victim's sexual orientation.

Hate crimes against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals also went up from previous years. The total was slightly higher in 2015, with the county recording 68 percent of reported hate crimes in the state.

The number of reported hate crimes in the United States has risen for the second straight year in 2016, according to statistics released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The latest overall figure included sharper spikes in hate crimes targeting several minority groups.

Six police departments reported a hate crime in 2016, including Atlanta, Conyers, the University of Georgia, along with Cobb, Fulton and Gwinnett County police.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which has documented 917 hate groups that are now operating in the United States, believes that Trump has impacted the rise in hate crimes.

46 percent of the perpetrators of hate crimes were white.

"Rhetoric becomes physical violence unless you do something to change it".

The FBI did not give a reason for a rise in reported hate crimes. During the first three months of 2017, the Anti-Defamation League recorded 541 anti-Semitic attacks, compared to 281 incidents in the same period in 2016.

The yearly report is the most comprehensive accounting of hate crimes in the U.S. But authorities have long warned it is incomplete, in part because it is based on voluntary reporting by police agencies across the country.

"No person should have to fear being violently attacked because of who they are, what they believe, of how they worship", said Attorney General Jeff Sessions in a statement after the report was published on November 13, The Washington Post reports.
