Trump also accused Franken of hypocrisy, saying "just last week he was lecturing anyone who would listen about sexual harassment and respect for women".

Hillary, 70, the former Democratic presidential nominee who previous year lost the White House race to Trump, 71, said that Democratic Senator Al Franken has apologised for his reported sexual misconduct and his willingness for a probe "is the kind of accountability Im talking about".

Former president George HW Bush, 93, has also found himself in the line of fire, accused by half a dozen women of groping them during photo ops, both before and after he became confined to a wheelchair.

But if the new standard in public life is that allegations that are widely believed against a figure like Moore, or Franken, require disqualification from political life, the President himself could find himself on unsafe ground.

At some point, Dana, we have to trust the people of Alabama to make the right decision.

The allegations against Moore are politically charged for the White House.

"Where do his hands go in pictures 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6 while she sleeps?"

Trump's relative silence on Moore is is in large part rooted in his own history of facing sexual misconduct allegations, a Republican close to the White House told CNN earlier this week.

When asked by reporters on Friday the difference between the allegations against Trump and those against Franken, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders replied: "Senator Franken has admitted wrongdoing and the president hasn't". "Me too!" he added of Moore. Al Franken, D-Minn., after the comedian-turned-politician was outed for sexually harassing a woman while she was asleep - and awake - about a decade ago.

"The president believes we can not allow a mere allegation, in this case one from many years ago, to destroy a person's life".

Franken was then a radio talk show host, comedy writer, and author, and not yet a senator, but he issued an apology and called for an ethics investigation of the incident.

Asked about what looks like selective outrage, White House officials said Trump (and Moore) deny the allegations against them, calling them politically motivated; Franken acknowledged the claims of a woman who produced photographic evidence. Maria Cantwell when told of the breaking news about the former "Saturday Night Live" regular in a corridor by CNN reporter Ashley Killough. Now he is betting that in this highly partisan environment, he is free to weigh in on controversies involving other men - particularly if they're Democrats like Franken and the now-deposed movie producer Harvey Weinstein, the party donor whose actions spurred the national discussion of sexual harassment. His aides insist the president wants voters in Alabama to determine Moore's fate. Sanders also refused to say whether Trump was pulling his endorsement of the candidate.
